Strong and rustic dogs, they were for
centuries the best parteners and companions for the romanian shepherds in the Carpathian mountains.
Their prime mission is to guard and
protect the herds against predators (wild animals or thieves).
Today, Romanian Shepherd Dogs are more
and more appreciated also by people living in cities, who keep them as watch dogs or just
as pets, because of their balanced temperament and the kindliness they show to children.
There are
three breeds of Romanian
shepherd dogs: MIORITIC
(old name Barac),
CARPATIN
(old name Zãvod) and
CIOBÃNESC
DE BUCOVINA.
In 2005, the Mioritic and Carpathian breeds
were recognised by the F.C.I. on provisional basis. The Bucovina Shepherd Dog is only registered by the Romanian Cynologic Association (A.Ch.R) and they are about to be registered also by F.C.I.
